The Problem

Nigeria grows one of the world's best cashews. And gives most of the value away.

Nigeria is consistently one of Africa's largest cashew producers, generating hundreds of thousands of tonnes of raw cashew nuts every year. Yet a significant proportion of that cashew leaves Nigeria in its most basic form — as raw, unprocessed nuts — at the lowest possible price point.

The processing, grading, packaging, branding and premium pricing all happen elsewhere — in Vietnam, India, the EU — while Nigerian farmers and the Nigerian economy receive a small fraction of the eventual value.

The farmers most affected by this are women, who make up the majority of cashew harvest labour across Nigeria's cashew-producing states.

The Opportunity

More processing in Nigeria means more value staying in Nigeria.

Premium graded cashew kernels command significantly higher prices than raw cashew nuts on international markets. Roasted snacks, cashew butter and other value-added products command even more. The global cashew market is large, growing, and hungry for quality.

CashewHer Nigeria believes that by building a women-led cashew value chain — from farmer sourcing to processed products to market access — we can demonstrate what Nigerian cashew can become.

We are an early-stage business with a long-term vision. We are not overstating where we are. But we know clearly where we are going.
