What Is Cashew Value Addition?
Value addition refers to any process that transforms a raw agricultural commodity into a more valuable product. For cashew, this means everything from shelling and grading raw nuts into export-grade kernels, to roasting and seasoning cashew for retail snacks, to cold-processing cashew into butter, to extracting Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) for industrial use.
Every step of value addition captures more of the final market price for Nigerian businesses โ instead of sending that value abroad in the form of raw, unprocessed nuts.
The value gap: Raw cashew nuts sell for approximately โฆ800โโฆ1,500/kg in Nigeria during harvest. Premium roasted cashew retail products can sell for โฆ3,000โโฆ8,000/kg or more. The difference is value addition โ and it's enormous.
Nigeria's Value Addition Problem
By most estimates, over 90% of Nigeria's cashew production is exported as raw cashew nuts. This means that the processing, grading, packaging, branding and marketing โ all the high-value activities in the cashew chain โ happen in other countries, primarily Vietnam and India.
Vietnam, the world's largest cashew exporter, imports raw nuts from West Africa (including Nigeria), processes them locally, and re-exports the kernels to global markets at a substantial markup. Nigeria is essentially outsourcing its cashew industry's most profitable activities.
The consequence is not just lost revenue at the business level โ it is lost jobs, lost industrial development, lost export earnings and lost agricultural sophistication for Nigeria as a whole.
The Four Main Cashew Value Addition Pathways
1. Cashew Kernel Processing
The most commercially significant pathway. Raw cashew nuts are steamed, shelled, peeled, dried and graded into W180, W240, W320 or other kernel grades. These kernels sell at $6โ$12/kg internationally โ compared to $0.80โ$1.20/kg for raw nuts.
Requirements: Steaming equipment, cashew shelling machines, peeling drums, drying trays or dryers, grading equipment. Workspace of at least 500โ1,000 sqm for commercial operations. Capital requirement: โฆ5โโฆ50 million depending on scale.
2. Roasted Cashew Snacks
Processing cashew kernels into retail-ready roasted snacks โ sea salt, spicy, honey glazed, natural, garlic herb and other flavours. This pathway requires less capital than kernel processing and targets both the domestic Nigerian market and export.
Requirements: Commercial oven or roasting drum, seasoning equipment, vacuum sealer or heat sealer, NAFDAC registration, retail packaging. Micro-scale can start from โฆ200,000โโฆ500,000. Can operate from a home kitchen at the start.
3. Cashew Butter
Cold-processing premium cashew kernels into natural cashew butter โ no additives, no preservatives, single ingredient. Cashew butter targets the premium health food segment, which is growing rapidly in Nigeria's urban centres and internationally.
Retail cashew butter in Nigerian health stores can sell for โฆ3,000โโฆ8,000 per 300g jar โ representing exceptional value per kilogram of input cashew.
Requirements: Industrial blender or nut butter mill, sterilisation capability, glass or BPA-free jar packaging. Relatively accessible startup cost compared to kernel processing.
4. CNSL Shell Oil
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is extracted from cashew shells during processing. It is a valuable industrial raw material used in brake linings, clutch facings, paints, varnishes, resins and polymers. CNSL is effectively a by-product that most processors can monetise alongside kernel production.
Requirements: CNSL extraction equipment (mechanical pressing or solvent extraction), storage tanks. Best as an add-on to kernel processing rather than a standalone business at small scale.
The Economics of Cashew Value Addition
| Product | Input (per kg raw nut) | Typical Output Value | Value Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Cashew Nut | 1 kg | โฆ800โโฆ1,500 | 1ร |
| Cashew Kernels (W320) | 1 kg raw โ 0.22 kg kernel | โฆ5,500โโฆ7,000/kg kernel | 3โ5ร |
| Roasted Cashew Snacks | 1 kg kernel โ 1 kg snack | โฆ3,500โโฆ8,000/kg retail | 5โ8ร |
| Cashew Butter | 1.1 kg kernel โ 1 kg butter | โฆ8,000โโฆ20,000/kg retail | 8โ15ร |
Note: Figures are approximate and vary by quality, market channel and season. Input-to-output ratios depend on kernel outturn percentage of raw nuts, typically 22โ26% by weight.
Who Should Consider Cashew Value Addition?
- Cashew farmers who want to capture more of their harvest value instead of selling raw to middlemen
- Food entrepreneurs looking for a product category with strong domestic demand and significant export potential
- Agribusiness investors seeking exposure to Nigeria's agricultural processing sector
- Existing food manufacturers looking to expand their portfolio with a premium natural product
